THE STEPPING MARKET

Natural tendencies

COURSE: ARCH 183 | INSTRUCTOR: NATSUMA IMAI | SPRING 2018 | WSOA

The intention of this course is to develop within its students an appreciation for architecture as a medium capable of engaging and responding to multiple scales of inhabitation. The fragment and the whole are to be understood as equal parts in the architectural proposal and the opportunities for design lie within the

coordination of systems that tether together scales of occupation. Through the design and editing of their tectonic systems, students will be prompted to make decisions regarding the qualitative nature of their inhabitable spaces: above vs. below, perimeter vs. interior, solid vs. void, poche vs. non-poche, etc.

PLANS

Started with a variation of basswood stick study models using modules. One model was chosen to be digitally modeled and constructed using two different fabrication methods.

Out of the two fabricated models, one was chosen and laid out five times to start thinking about circulation and inhabiting the space. It was altered according to the use of the program.
