site orders

COURSE: ARCH 283 | INSTRUCTOR: EWAN BRANDA | SPRING 2019 | WSOA

Natural and urban site orders are explored and analyzed using writing, photography, mapping and sectional studies to develop site planning and building design with special emphasis given to the relationship between program and external context. The project focuses on influences of adjacencies and environment,

through the development of clear systems of movement, space, structure, energy efficiency and daylight. This studio explores a contemporary manifestation of such an environment: a high-speed fulfillment center in urban Los Angeles. As our attention spans shorten and our need for instant gratification deepens, technological solutions have emerged to satisfy these desires.

AXONOMETRIC

The fulfillment center was the program given for this project, but students were asked to add another program of their choice. For this project, a performing arts center and dance studio were the decided programs. The goal was to explore how two completely different programs work together in the same building and how

they can correspond to one another. The distinction between public and private spaces was shown using the site. Exiting the 710 freeway, the visible portion or “above ground” is the public space which is the performing arts center and the private space which is the fulfillment center and the dance studio was embedded into the site. Also, automated parking was chosen for this project to help reduce the area of parking lots and not ruin the aesthetic of the site.
